Herbs obtained from some plants in nature; are turned into substances. To give an example; we can talk about cannabis, which is the most commonly used among them. Cannabis consists of the brown/green flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds of a plant called cannabissativa. It is derived from hemp or cannabis herb.
We can often hear its name as "hashish" or "opium poppy". However, although "hashish" and "opium poppy" are from the same family, they are different plants. Among users, it is also known by names such as "joint", "marijuana", "weed".
While talking about natural substances, it is also useful to address the misconception that they do not cause addiction. Being natural does not mean that these substances do not cause addiction!
Research shows that cannabis use causes physical and psychological addiction. In a study, 35% of cannabis users reported that they could not quit cannabis even though they wanted to, 24% continued to use it despite the problems they experienced due to cannabis use, and 13% stated that they could not control their cannabis consumption. 20% of the users participating in the research expressed that they felt extreme restlessness and tension when they did not use cannabis.
Since the addiction potential of cannabis and derivative natural substances is moderate, the development of addiction may be delayed. However, this does not mean that it does not cause addiction. The risk of addiction increases depending on usage. It has been determined that the frequency of addiction among those who use cannabis a few times a week and for a long time varies between 57% and 92%. Cannabis users are 140 times more likely to use substances compared to those who have never used them. For example, opium, which is considered one of these natural substances, is also a natural substance and causes severe addiction.
In summary, whether natural or not, substances cause addiction. The fact that a substance is natural does not indicate that it will not develop addiction!
