One of the misconceptions about addiction is the belief that addiction is a matter of willpower, and that people with weak willpower will become addicted. It is thought that those with willpower will not experience this problem. What should not be forgotten is that everyone can become addicted.

Every person is unique and one of a kind. Therefore, individual characteristics will also vary from person to person. Personality is shaped according to these individual characteristics. There can be many personal or environmental factors that trigger substance use. One of these reasons may be some features in personality. We can think of willpower as a personality trait. While an addicted person may have such a problem, it is also possible for someone to develop an addiction without having any personality-related issues. In such a case, it would not be correct to speak of a direct relationship between personality and addiction.

If we view substance addiction as a matter of willpower by isolating it from all other causes and effects, we would not be giving the issue the importance it deserves and would be underestimating the problem. In such a case, it will not be possible for us to reach the right solution. For example, when we consider someone who smokes, is a person who is determined in other areas of their life but cannot quit smoking when they want to be considered weak-willed? In this case, it might be more accurate to say that they have lost control rather than being weak-willed.

Once you become addicted, the substance you use becomes more important than your own self. In this sense, addiction prevents a person from maintaining their existence as a whole. Instead of their own self, a new entity has formed that has become one with the substance they use, and therefore, it is quite difficult to separate from this substance.
